What are Early Start League (ESL) ratings? How and why are they used?To insure that our players are correctly rated for Fall Leagues (Adult, Senior and City), we use Early Start League ratings. Players use these dynamic ratings when registering for any leagues "going forward" from the date of publication.
After Early Start League ratings are published, players who think their new rating might be too high or low for their abilities can file an appeal. Appeals are filed online at www.ustageorgia.com.
NOTE: The ESL rating is simply a player's dynamic rating at a particular point in time.
Example 1: Player Joe Tennis has been a top 3.0 player all season. In the last match he plays before ESLs are calculated, he has a magical out-of-his-mind, in-the-zone match, and blows his very strong opponent away. His ESL rating will reflect this stunning victory and may push him into the 3.5 range.
Example 2: Player Mary Tennis has played all season as an average 3.5. In her last two matches, she is preoccupied with her dog's case of mange and her husband's "one of us has to go" ultimatum. She loses those two matches very badly. Her ESL rating may move her down to 3.0.
The "Three Strike" program is still in effect for all Adult and Senior matches. Players who consistently play out of level are likely to be disqualified.
Who gets a published ESL rating?
- All self rated players who have generated at least two dynamics in the prior season.
- Any computer rated player who generates an ESL rating that is different either higher or lower, than their previous computer rating.
How do ESL ratings impact the various leagues?- A player who is already on a team with a prior rating is not affected by his new ESL rating. He continues to play through the season for that team, with the rating he had when he joined the team.
- Players joining an Adult, Senior or City league team for Fall use the new most current rating.
